Sept. 4, 1925-April 21, 2007

Dorothy Rosella Erickson Allen, 81, of Ames, passed away of cancer on Saturday, April 21, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Dorothy was born on September 4, 1925, to the late Lewis B. and Minnie (Monson) Erickson, of rural Slater, Iowa where she attended and graduated from Slater High School. After receiving her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa, she attended Drake University and received her bachelor's degree. She furthered her education at the University of Minnesota, The College of Design and Graduate College at Iowa State University. Her teaching career included Slater, Ames and Des Moines.

On June 7, 1958, she married Philip Manning Allen, of Ames, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. In 1961, they joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines where they were members of the Cathedral Choir for many years. Her interests and participation in music continued throughout her life. She and her husband lived most of their lives in Ames and at their summer home on Long Lake at Park Rapids, Minn.

Survivors include her husband, Philip, of Ames, and six sisters, Leona and Idellis Jean Erickson, of Kansas City, Mo., Betty Anderson, of Mankato, Minn., Ramona (Jerry) Tokheim, of Edina, Minn., Glennice (Ralph) Picht, of Bella Vista, Ark., D. Patricia Crosley, of Park Rapids, Minn., and several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Rufus Erickson and three sisters, Caroleen Younker, Lois Larson and Margene Chelsvig.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated for St. John's Lutheran Church of Des Moines, Bethany Lutheran Church of Kelley or the William R. Bliss Cancer Center of Ames.
