July 18, 1935-April 16, 2007

George Lemanczyk, 71, of Ames, died Monday, April 16, at Israel Family Hospice House, following a long battle with cancer. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, with Father Terry Rassmussen, Father Ivan Nienhaus and Father Howard Hansen co-presiding. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

George Lemanczyk was born July 18, 1935, in Milwaukee, to John and Sally (Gazdecki) Lemanczyk. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Milwaukee in 1953. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-59.

He married Rita Wierzba Oct. 5, 1957. Following his military service, they returned to Milwaukee, where he was employed by House of Vision. He transferred with the company to Ames in April 1964. He later was employed with McFarland Eye Center for 28 years, retiring in 2001. He also owned his Creative Framing business for 10 years.

He was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, serving in music ministry and as an usher. He was a past member of Lions Club and Toastmasters. He was very passionate about his music, performing in his own George Leeman Band in Milwaukee and the Holy Ground band in Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Lemanczyk, of Ames; two daughters, Amanda (James) Ross, of Ankeny, and Lisa Lemanczyk, of Danville, Calif.; one son, Michael Lemanczyk, of Minneapolis; two grandsons, Matthew and Michael Ross; and one sister, Lorraine Blank, of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Ervin Lemanczyk.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bliss Oncology Department or St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
