THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 10, 2007.

Oct. 30, 1919-April 7, 2007

Gladys Ruth Wheelock, 87, of Ames, died Saturday, April 7, at home surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at St. Cecilia Church, 2900 Hoover Ave., in Ames. Please join family and friends for a celebration of life from 6 to 8 tonight at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames.

Gladys was born Oct. 30, 1919, in Hamilton County, to Randi and Ben Gaard. She graduated from Story City High School in 1937 and married Joseph Leo Wheelock, of Nevada, May 26, 1940.

Over the course of her life, she faced great loss with strength and courage, moving from homemaker to the workplace while still caring for her children and making a home. She made the act of managing a household and raising six children seem effortless. She demonstrated unconditional love, accepting all the changes and turmoil of life with six children and their families. She faced illness with grace and an ability to live one day at a time, teaching those she met the value of cherishing the moment.

She is survived by six children, Karen (Don) Brezicka, Cheryl Binzen, Mary Wheelock, Barb Wheelock (Greg Courtney), Gary (Doris) Wheelock and Mike Wheelock (Brenda Bright); nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Bie; and one sister-in-law, Katherine Wheelock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; and two brothers.

Memorial contributions in her honor should be directed to St. Cecilia Church or Israel Family Hospice House.
