Robert (Bob) Cyril Campbell, 68, died Tuesday, April 3, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, with burial of the cremains at a later date in McCook, Neb.

Bob Campbell was born Feb. 22, 1939, in McCook, Neb., to Cyril and Eunice Campbell. He married LoAnn Bowen March 9, 1957. He was a graduate of McCook High School where he excelled in basketball, football, baseball and track. He developed a love for sports early in life when he served as batboy for the semi-pro baseball team in McCook. A 1960 graduate of Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, he was co-captain of the college football team during his senior year. He also coached Junior American Legion baseball during the summer. He earned a master's degree in physical education at the University of Wyoming.

Early in his professional career, he taught social studies and coached the high school eight-man football team as well as the basketball and track teams at Wallace, Neb. In 1962, he developed the elementary physical education program for the Oberlin, Kan., Elementary School. The Oberlin Jaycees named him Outstanding Young Teacher of 1965.

In 1966, he and his family moved to Ames, where he taught elementary physical education and drivers' education. Bob served as an assistant coach for various sports in the Ames Community Schools and coached Little League baseball for many years. He retired from teaching in 1999.

During retirement, he loved golfing and playing poker with his many friends. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the United States, especially to visit his children and grandchildren in Maryland, California and Louisiana. All who knew him considered him a gentle, kind friend.

He is survived by his wife, LoAnn; his three children, Shawn (Sally) Campbell, of Glen Burnie, Md., Shelby Campbell, of San Francisco, and Syd (Elizabeth) Campbell, of River Ridge, La. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Bryan, Dylan, Deanna, Leah, and Lauren Campbell and Austin, Sydnie, Samantha, and Stephen Campbell.
