THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, March 30, 2007.

John Canon Barnes Jr., 88, died Wednesday, March 28, in Burlington, N.C., of bone cancer. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, N.C. The family will receive friends and family from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home

John Canon Barnes Jr. was born Oct. 19, 1918, in New Bern, N.C., the last of eight children born to John Canon Barnes and Cleora Bishop Barnes, of Edgecombe County, N.C. He graduated from New Bern High School and lived in Raleigh, N.C., as a young man. He was a railroad engineer for Atlantic Coast Line/Seaboard Coast line, now CSX Railroad, for 44 years. He and his wife, Barbara Yates Barnes, were married 56 years. She preceded him in death in June 2001. They lived in Rocky Mount for 53 years. They were both charter members of Englewood United Methodist Church. He was president of the Brotherhood of Engineers for nine years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was elected Shriner of the Year twice. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his hard work, his sense of humor and his quiet generosity.

He is survived by one son, John Howard Barnes and his daughter-in-law, Joan Baker Barnes, of Elon, N.C.; one daughter, Georgia Barnes Grant and his son-in-law, Henry Boone Grant Jr., of New Virginia; five grandchildren, Al Barnes and wife, Ramona, of Gibsonville, N.C., Don Barnes, of Elon, N.C., John Boone Grant, of Olympia, Wash., James Applewood Grant, of Durham, N.C., and Adrianna Barbara Grant, of Ames; and two great-granddaughters, Amber and Kristi Barnes of Gibsonville, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Rocky Mount Shrine Club, 320 Airport Road Rocky Mount, NC 27804, and to Englewood United Methodist Church, 300 S. Circle Drive Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804, is in charge of arrangements.
