April 22, 1946-March 24, 2007

David Joseph Schubert, 60, died Saturday, March 24, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a courageous three-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church with Father Ivan Nienhaus presiding. There will be no burial service.

David Joseph Schubert was born April 22, 1946, in Jackson, Minn., to Aloysius and Margaret Schubert. He grew up with six brothers and sisters on a farm between Canby, Minn., and Madison, Minn. He graduated from Madison (Minnesota) High School where he excelled in gymnastics.

He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran and served his country honorably from 1964 to 1968. He was stationed aboard the USS Constellation and the USS Coral Sea. Dave completed an associate degree in fire science from San Diego Community College in California and served briefly on the National City Fire Department in California. He retired from the Ames Fire Department in 2004 after 20 years of committed service. He also enjoyed employment with Conley Trucking.

He married Roberta Pistulka Feb. 18, 1978, and celebrated 29 years of marriage with her in 2007. He loved the ocean, playing tennis and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. His passion was riding his motorcycle in the Run for the Wall. He enjoyed coaching his daughter in sports and also was her greatest fan.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Robbie Schubert, of Ames; one son, Michael (Ann) Kernodle and grandchildren David, Mari, Jake and Gabriel, all of Graham, N.C.; one daughter, Stephanie Schubert, of Ames; his mother, Margaret "Peg" Schubert, of Canby, Minn.; two sisters, Judy (Lew) Shaver and Mary (Jim) Harkins, all of Canby, Minn.; two brothers, Mark (Bernie) Schubert, of Canby, Minn., and Daniel (Anna) Schubert, of Marshall, Minn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Maxine Pistulka, of Redwood Falls, Minn.; and many other loving family members including nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Al; two brothers, Michael and Patrick; and his poor miserable dog, Cujo.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Stevens Memorial Chapel with a short service of remembrance at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Run for the Wall.
