Marie Drake, 88, of Ames, died Sunday, March 4, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Marie Drake was born March 12, 1918, in Valentine, Neb., to Carl and Mae (Peters) Tragner. She received a bachelor's degree from Nebraska State Teachers College at Chadron and did graduate work at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. She married Allen Drake July 11, 1942, in Omaha, Neb. She was a high school business teacher for 16 years in Valentine, Neb., and Audubon, retiring in 1958.
She was a member of Collegiate United Methodist Church and loved playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean (Jack) Cleverley, of Ames; two sisters, Marge Vance, of Des Moines, and Virginia Raines, of Lumberton, Miss.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, Michelle (Ben) Chae and their children Choon-Hee and Bodhi, of Kingwood, Texas, George (Beth) Morden and their children Zachary, Joshua and Nicholas, of Coralville, Matthew Cleverley, of Ames, Deb (Chris) Binns, of Scranton, Denise (Jeff) Cardella and their children Matteo, Emily and Danielle, of Roland, and Todd (Shelli) Cleverley and their children Gracie and Otis, of Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Walter Wertz; her husband, Allen; one brother, George Wertz; and one sister, Ellie Farwell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's disease research at Mayo Clinic or to the charity of the donor's choice.
