Died, at her home in Nevada, September 17, 1899, Mrs. Mary Spencer, wife of Isaac Spencer, aged 79 years, 2 months and 11 days.
Mrs. Spencer, whose maiden name was Clark, was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 6, 1820, and was married at Lockwin, Delaware county, Ohio, January 1, 1837, to Mr. Spencer, who survives her at the age of 84 and after a married life of nearly 63 years. The family came from Ohio to Story county in 1865 and have resided here ever since. The descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer have been 12 children, 56 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, 97 in all, of whom there are living 9 children, 43 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, 78 in all, and, with their respective wives and husbands constituting a family of more than a hundred. Besides rearing her own children, Mrs. Spencer gave a mother's care to four nieces and nephews, and her life though modest, was as worthy and useful as it was long. She was a woman of sterling character and of strong opinion upon questions of temperance and morality and she was a devoted and faithful member of the Methodist church. She reared her children to be worthy men and women, endured the privations of pioneer life in two states, and lived to enjoy an old age of honored and triumphant womanhood.
The funeral was conducted at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. Fletcher Brown, and tenderly the aged wife and mother was laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery, and in the confident hope of a reunited family above.
For many acts of neighborly kindness in their bereavement the husband and children wish to have expressed their grateful acknowledgement.
