THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, February 18, 2007.

Emmert William Hansen, 86, of Missoula, Mont., passed away from natural causes Feb. 8, at the Village Senior Residence. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Atonement Lutheran Church in Missoula, with Pastor Mitch Jones officiating. There will be a luncheon following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D., at a later date.

Emmert William Hansen was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Shelby, the youngest of four children, to Axel and Antonia Hansen. He graduated from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Neb., in 1938. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Germany and Austria.

In 1947, Emmert married Lavonne Turk. Emmert worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Neb., from 1947 to 1953. The couple lived on a farm near Gilbert while Emmert attended Iowa State University from 1953 to 1957, receiving a doctorate in veterinary medicine.

After graduation from veterinary school, the couple moved to a farm in Salem, S.D., in 1957 and owned a large animal veterinary practice for 16 years. In Salem, he served on the Salem Public School Board for many years. In 1974, he began a small animal clinic in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he practiced until his retirement in 1988.

In 1991, he moved to Lolo, Mont., to be near his son and lived in the Lolo and Missoula areas until his death. He married Charlotte Hagler in 1993.

Emmert enjoyed gardening, working on the farm, watching wildlife and, in his later years, traveling. He was an active member of Atonement Lutheran Church, American Veterinary Medicine Association and the American Legion.

Survivors include his seven children, Dennis (Mona) and children Emily and Jessica (Jeremy); Curt; Sarah (Rhon) Anderson and children Jacob, Matthew and Elizabeth, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mark (Jan), of Richland, Wash., and son, Jeff (Stephanie); Paul (Dianne) and daughter, Rachel, of Lolo; Ann (Paul) Turbiville and children Adam, Allison and Audrey, of Belle Fourche, S.D.; John (Cindy) and children Ellen and Thomas, of Ames; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Atonement Lutheran Church, 2205 34th Street SW, Missoula, MT 59801.

Garden City Funeral Home in Missoula, Mont., is handling the arrangements.
