David Hawkins, 59, of Ames, died Monday, Feb. 12, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Fahlun Lutheran Church in Nelson, Minn., with Pastor Joan Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in Fahlun Cemetery in Nelson, Minn.
David Hawkins was born Sept. 9, 1947, in Alexandria, Minn., the son of Donald and Hazel (Hanson) Hawkins. He was a 1965 graduate of Norte Vista High School in Riverside, Calif., and attended RCC Riverside City College. He moved to the Stratford area in 1981 where he continued working as a carpenter for over 35 years, most recently through Carpenter's Local No. 106.
He married Lesley Peterson July 6, 1985, at Stratford Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed stamp collecting, coin collecting, gardening, music and umpiring girls' softball. He played drums for many years with bands in California and Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Lesley, of Ames; four children, Jim Hawkins, of Clarksville, Ark., Pat Hawkins, of Clarksville, Ark., Nikolas Hawkins, of Woodward, and Caitlyn Hawkins, of Ames; father and stepmother, Don and Elaine Hawkins, of Osakis, Minn.; two brothers, Mark (Nancy) Hawkins, of Riverside, Calif., and Colin Hawkins, of Riverside, Calif.; one sister, Kim Marsden, of Borrego Springs, Calif.; three nephews, Matt (Denise) Anderson, of Indianola, Nathan (Sarah) Anderson, of Baxter, and Andrew Hawkins, of Riverside, Calif.; one niece, Kerry Marsden, of Arcata, Calif.; two great-nieces, Mariah and Kiersten Anderson, both of Indianola; and one great-nephew, Aaron Anderson, of Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister, Sharon Anderson in April 2003.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone. Visitation in Minnesota will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday, Feb. 19, at Fahlun Lutheran Church in Nelson, Minn.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
