Richard Kevin McKinley, 53 of Roland died on Monday, January 1, 2007 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 5 at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Kevin was born on April 30, 1953 in Ames to Chelsea Wilford and Mary Louise (Williams) McKinley. He graduated from Tech High in Des Moines. Kevin served in the Army during the Vietnam War as a Military Policeman. On August 21, 1976, he married Debra Danelle Shumate in Adel, Iowa. He retired from the Story County Sheriffs Office as a Deputy Sheriff. He also was involved in the D.A.R.E. Program and was a hostage negotiator. Kevin was a member of the Roland Legion Post #307, Mid Iowa Star Chapter 210 Touring and Riding, Pheasants Forever, Loyal Order of the Moose 520, State and National Sheriffs Association.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Debra McKinley of Roland; 3 sons, Jeremy McKinley (Shanon) of Huxley, Sean McKinley and Eric McKinley, both at home; a daughter, Jessica McKinley of Nevada;
2 brothers, Mike McKinley (Penni) and Tim McKinley (Barb), all of Ames; 3 grandchildren, Bryon, Dylan, and Hunter.Kevin was preceded in death by Mary McKinley Miller in January 2004 and Chelsea McKinley in June of 1966.
The family will received friends on Thursday, January 4 from 5-8:00 P.M. at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established.
Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with Kevin's arrangements.
