Eldin A. Hand, 88, of Ames, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Bethesda Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joel Wight Hoogheem officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Eldin A. Hand was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Pilot Mound, to Allen and Pearle (Good) Hand. He was a 1936 graduate of Pilot Mound High School and attended Simpson College. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a police officer in Ames for 35 years and achieved the rank of captain.

He married Loretta Monson Dec. 15, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1997. He married Darlean Moore Jan. 11, 2003.

He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames Police Benevolent Association, Story County Police Officers Association, Iowa State Police Association, lifetime member of Arcadia Lodge No. 249, member of Ames Laura Chapter Eastern Star and a lifetime member of Ames Optimist Club.

He is survived by his wife, Darlean Moore, of Ames; one son, John Hand, of Marshalltown; stepsons, Leon Moore, of Windsor, Colo., and Douglas (Syd) Moore, of Nevada; stepdaughter, Pat (Bill) Wieland, of Cummings; two sisters, Margaret (Kenneth) Clouser, of Gilbert, and Irene Wilkens, of Ankeny; one grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Loretta; and one brother, LaVerne Hand.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Adams Funeral Home.
