Betty Abrahamsen, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines. She was surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will follow at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Betty Abrahamsen was born March 1, 1922, in Colo, where she grew up and graduated from Colo High School. Betty held various jobs in Des Moines after graduation. She met her husband, Svend Abrahamsen, while working at Firestone Tire and Rubber. They were married March 24, 1946, and were married 46 years prior to Svend's death. They made their home and raised their family in Ames. Betty was a stay-at-home mom but sometimes took a job outside of the home for short periods of time. Betty worked at Sigler Printing and Collegiate Manufacturing. The past few years, Betty lived at Beaverdale Estates in Des Moines where she had many wonderful friends.

Betty is survived by her children, Andy (Leslea) Abrahamsen, of Boone, and Marlou (Bill) Pieper, of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Emily Abrahamsen, of West Des Moines, and A.J. Abrahamsen, of Ames; nephew, Richard A. Lloyd who she helped raise; her siblings, Johnny (Pauline) Andrew, of Bondurant, Shirley (Gordon) Holland, of Collins, and Donald (Norma) Andrew, of Des Moines; and many other nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Svend; parents, Frank and Sarah Andrew; and siblings, Margaret, Harold, Carl, Dick and Galen.

Betty's family brought her the most joy in life.

Visitation with family present will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Betty loved children, so in honor of this, memorial contributions can be made to the Mentor Iowa program.
