THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, December 9, 2006.

Hazel Lee Westervelt Orton, 81, of Ames, died on Dec. 9. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames with the Rev. David Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Squire Boone Cemetery, five miles south of Boone.

Hazel was born June 26, 1925, in Churdan to Alanson Knox and Clara (Northrop) Westervelt. She was raised in Webster City for 10 years before moving to Ames in 1939 and graduating from Ames High School in 1944. Hazel attended Iowa State College in Ames but graduated in 1948 from the University of Iowa in the College of Nursing. The same year, Hazel married William Roger Orton on June 5. She practiced her profession for 40 years, with 30 years of employment with ISU, before her retirement in 1987. Hazel was an active member in the First Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, the DuBois Family Association, the Huguenot Society of the State of Iowa, the Ames Woman's Club and various other organizations.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Robert) Englehart and Rosemarie (David) Starrett, both of Ames; three grandchildren, Stephenie, Brian and Stacey; one great-grandson; one brother, James Wendell Westervelt, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Miriam Rose Coyle, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

A memorial fund has been established at the First Baptist Church, 200 Lynn Ave., Ames, IA, 50014.
