THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, December 9, 2006.

Lester Herman Bartell, 88, of Nevada, died Friday, Dec. 8, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.

Lester was born on Nov. 2, 1918, in Jackson, Minn., to Frank and Millie (Nerness) Bortell. He served in the Army during World War II and received two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars.

Lester married Ruth June Setzer in Story County. Before his retirement in 1983, he was employed for 33 years at John Deere. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada and a proud member of the Sons of Norway. Lester enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and collecting John Deere memorabilia.

Lester is survived by one son, Les Bartell (Maryanne), of Grand Rapids, Mich.; one daughter, JoAn Olson, of Cadott, Wis.; a brother, Thomas Bartell, of Osceola; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth, on April 14, 1974; a brother, Maynard Bartell; and a sister, Frances Coles.

Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 10, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in Lester's for the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
