Alfred Stempel, 95, died Thursday, Nov. 30, at Northcrest Retirement Community in Ames. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Collegiate United Methodist Church. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alfred Stempel, 95, of Ames, died Thursday, Nov. 30, of natural causes at Northcrest Community in Ames. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, with the Rev. Scott Grotewold officiating. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Stempel was born in Newark, N.J., to Charles and Elizabeth (Kotsch) Stempel. He married Evelyn Guest on August 28, 1937, in Newark, N.J. He graduated from Newark East Side High School, received a Bachelor of Commercial Science from New York University in 1938 and had additional post graduate insurance courses.

He was employed at the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company from 1929-76 when he retired as vice president of the farm management investment department. He moved from Nutley, N.J., to Ames in 1954.

He was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Ames Chamber of Commerce, Collegiate United Methodist Church and an honorary 4-H member.

Past community services included Noon Kiwanis Club President 1962 and treasurer from 1966-82, Story Co. Red Cross treasurer, Ames Chamber of Commerce treasurer, Mary Greeley Hospital Board, Mary Greeley Hospital Foundation, Mary Greeley Hospital Parking Committee, Mary Greeley Hospital Hospice House Search Committee, Bethany Manor Ethics Committee, Story County Extension Council Chairman, 1966-69, ISU Extension Advisory Council, Ames Foundation Vice President and Board Member, First National Bank Director, 1973-91, Ames National Corporation Director, Youth and Shelter Services First Sustaining Fund Drive, 1978-79, Lifeline Emergency Response System Advocate, Senior Citizens Center (now Heartland) board member and ISU Order of the Knoll.

He is survived by a daughter, Lynn (Karl) Griffith, of Mason City; two grandsons, Dave (Renae) Griffith, of Kansas City, and Randy (Sue) Griffith, of Ames; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Mariah Griffith; and a sister, Eleanor Hoesel, of Jupiter, Fla.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl, and his wife, Evelyn in 1994.
