Robert "Bob" James Hitsman went home to the Lord on Monday, Nov. 20, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, having reached the age of 80 years, 7 months, 23 days.

Robert was born on March 28, 1926, in Boone County, the son of French Maynard and Sadie Francis (Wight) Hitsman. Robert grew up in Boone County and lived in the area most of his life, except the time he served in the European Theater with the Army during World War II and for the other military training. He held several jobs during his life, including surveyor, Iowa Natural Gas, car salesman at Burke Ford in Perry, pilot in the Iowa National Guard Unit at Boone and motor pool inspector for the Iowa National Guard. He retired from the Iowa National Guard and the State of Iowa.

Robert was married to Elinor Jean (Anderson) Ray on March 25, 1981, in the First United Methodist Church of Boone.

During his retirement Robert enjoyed the activities with all his memberships. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, V.F.W., American Legion, Moose Lodge No.104, Hunt & Fish Club and Boone Veterans Council, all of Boone; Mirza Lodge No. 609, of Pilot Mound, Boone County & FEZ-B Shrine Clubs of Zag-Ga-Zig Temple, The Order of the Eastern Star of Polk City; Iowa Chapter Military Officers Association of America; and Lifetime Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society.

He enjoyed flying small planes and helicopters and traveling.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elinor, in 1997, his sister, Hazel Cantonwine; and his two brothers, Verne and Eugene.

Left to mourn his passing are his son, Robert K. Hitsman, of Dent, Minn.; his daughter, Kelli Hitsman, of Ames; his longtime companion, Dolores (Rosie) Hein, of Boone; his sister Helen Page, of Boone; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Verne (Ruth) Hitsman, of Boone; his step-daughter, Joanne Cluver and her husband, Mark, of Washington State; his step-son, Dick Ray, and his wife, Sharon, of Rhodes; his step-grandson, Tracey Golly, of Alaska, three step-granddaughters, Ginger Johnson and her husband Charlie, of Alaska, Tina Dunham and her husband Tom, of Rhodes; and Molly Meyers, of Washington State; three step-great-grandchildren, Bristol Johnson, Mason Meyers and Jazzi Golly along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 25, at the First United Methodist Church of Boone. The Rev. Andrea Kraushaar will officiate. After the funeral service there will be a cremation.

Burial of the cremated remains will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Nov. 27, in the Boone Memorial Gardens. Rev. Philip Webb will officiate. Full military honors will be conduced at the graveside by the Boone Veterans Council.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story Streets of Boone from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Masonic Rites Service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Saturday morning at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will continue at the church from noon to the time of service at 1:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
