THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, November 22, 2006.

Roberta Fritchman Vance, 91, died Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Green Hills Health Care Center, Ames, Iowa. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Vance was born March 5, 1916, in Savannah, Mo., the daughter of Fred and Maud (Ferguson) Fritchman. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1934 and attended Platt-Gard Business University until December 1934. In 1935, she began her studies at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1940. She taught commercial arts at Marceline High School, in Marceline, Mo., from 1940-42 and then moved to Evansville, Ind., to become an instructor of commercial arts at F.J. Reitz High School. She returned to the University of Missouri, Columbia, and earned a master's degree in education in 1944. She worked at the registrar's office at the University of Missouri until she moved to Ames in December 1946 to take a position at Iowa State University. During her employment at ISU, she worked as secretary to President Charles E. Friley and President James H. Hilton. She married Benjamin F. Vance June 27, 1962, in Savannah, Mo. She retired from ISU in 1974 as an administrative secretary in information service. Her last few years were spent at Green Hills Health Care Center, where she enjoyed visiting with other ISU retirees and the wonderful staff at the center. She loved traveling, reading, photography and watching her grandchildren grow.

She is survived by three step-sons, Bruce (Judy) Vance, of Ames, Sam (Linda) Vance, of Geneva, Ill., and Robert (Kathy) Vance, of San Marcos, Texas; three cousins, Lucille Eagle, of Pea Ridge, Ark., Curtis Fritchman, of Little Rock, Ark., and Guylene F. Hegarty, of Livermore, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 3, 1996.
