John Birkestrand
Feb. 10, 1920-Nov. 8, 2006John Birkestrand, 86, of Ballard Creek in Huxley, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Israel Family Hospice House. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, with the Rev. Tom Hilger officiating. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery.
John Birkestrand was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Cambridge, to Albert J. and Anna Margaret (Johnson) Birkestrand. He farmed in Cambridge and Huxley and was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Lois Anderson Dec. 29, 1972.
He is survived by stepsons, Roger Anderson, of Clear Lake, Rick Anderson, of Ankeny, and Ron Anderson, of Ankeny; two sisters, Stella Carley, of Las Vegas, and JoAnne Gregg, of Decorah; one brother, Clifford Birkestrand, of Huxley; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and one brother, Arnold.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be given to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.
Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements.
