Gerald "Jerry" Grebasch, 70, of Maxwell, died peacefully at home Thursday, Oct. 19.

Grebasch was born March 31, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Charles and Helen (Marsalek) Grebasch. After graduating from Lake Geneva High School in Lake Geneva, Wis., Jerry earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan State University in 1959.

On September 12, 1959, he married fellow Michigan State graduate, Diana Madar, in Detroit, Mich. Following two and a half years of service in the U.S. Army, Grebasch joined the then-Iowa Conservation Commission (now DNR) in 1962. For 37 of his 40 years with the DNR he managed the State Forest Nursery in Ames. He retired in 2002. Grebasch loved spending time with his family. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of Ames High School sports. For over 20 years he ran the scoreboard at Ames High football games. Grebasch was an active member of St. Mary's-Holy Cross Catholic Church in Elkhart. He enjoyed Civil War history, beekeeping, baking bread, trains and the Green Bay Packers. He will be remembered for his ready sense of humor, his love for his family and his devotion to God.

Grebasch is survived by his wife, Diana, of Maxwell; four sons, Matthew Grebasch, of Evansville, Ind., David and his wife, Susan Grebasch, of Ankeny, Nathan and his wife, Gretchen Grebasch, of Maxwell, and Thaddeus Grebasch, of Maxwell; four daughters, Virginia Grebasch, of Annapolis, Md., Laura Grebasch of Sioux City, Ellen and her husband, Jay Moore, of Arlington, Va., and Abigail Grebasch, of Annapolis, Md.; and three grandchildren, Kira, Emily and Jonas.

Grebasch was preceded in death by his parents and only sibling, Rev. Richard Grebasch.

Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart. A brief Christian Vigil Service will follow at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, south of Maxwell.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203, or the Thomas More Society, 29 South LaSalle Street, Suite 440, Chicago, Ill. 60603.

The Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
