THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, August 5, 2006.

Jo Ann Barnes, 76, of Ames, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, of cancer at Israel Hospice House in Ames.

Jo Ann Barnes was born May 11, 1930, in Ames to Charlie and Josephine (Walther) Sorenson. She attended Ames High School, graduating in 1948. She also was a graduate of Iowa State University in 1952 and earned a Master's degree in higher education from Iowa State in 1983. She was a junior high and high school teacher in Kalona and Ames and was later employed as a Real Estate salesperson for Gray Real Estate in Ames prior to working for the State of Iowa as a Student Loan Administrator. She retired in 1994. Jo was a well-known supporter of many causes and charities throughout her lifetime in both Story City and Ames.

Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Lynn Barnes, and her husband Rick Snedden, of Chicago; one son, Guy Barnes and wife Wendy of Sante Fe, N.M.; their father, Forrest Barnes of Ames; a cousin, Lynn Landers-Dickinson, of Bondurant; her adopted granddaughter and caretaker, Allison Hobbs; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her cousin, Gloria Landers, of Des Moines.

A gathering of family and friends to remember Jo will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cottage on Broad in Story City.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Bertha Bartlett Public Library in Story City.
