Evelyn M. Brekke, 88, of Cambridge, died Tuesday, July 4, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at Campus Baptist Church in Ames with Pastors Will Hatfield and Jack Dowden officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Nevada.Evelyn was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Marshall County to Edward and Ida (Richerodt) Schuler. She lived in Nevada, Shipley and Bella Vista, Ark. before moving back to Cambridge in 1995.
She graduated from beauty school at age 16 and opened her own shop in Nevada at age 17. She had a beauty shop on the farm from 1950 until she retired in 1978.
She married Meyer Brekke Feb. 13, 1937, in Nevada. She helped her husband in their farming operation. She was a member of Campus Baptist Church and was very active there. She taught Sunday School and especially enjoyed teaching the small children. She also did a local mission outreach using "Scenafelt" in the 1950s. She enjoyed playing the organ, piano and accordion.
She is survived by her husband, Meyer Brekke, of Cambridge; two sons, Jim (Irene) of Exeter, Neb., and Mel (Sue), of Huxley; one brother, Ernie Schuler, of Zearing; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, LaVonne Bennet; and one brother, Raymond Schuler.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at Campus Baptist Church in Ames.
Memorials in honor of Evelyn are to be directed to Campus Baptist Church.
