THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

Don C. Hatt, 84, of Salix and formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, June 26, at Embassy Nursing and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff. Following cremation, visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, formerly Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Cemetery and Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City with military rites by U.S. Naval Reserve.

Don was born on April 1, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of A. C. and Olive L. (Long) Hatt. He graduated from Central High School and attended Morningside College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he was a U.S. Naval reservist until full retirement. He married Arla Mae Vigen Oct. 6, 1950, in Sioux City. She died March 27, 1973, in Sioux City.

He was owner and operator of Hatt Construction for more than 30 years. Upon retiring from his business, he retired to his farm property near Salix. He loved the outdoors, repairing and restoring machinery. He especially enjoyed flying while with the Naval Reserves. He always had time for good chat and a story. His constant companions were his dogs, Herka-Dog.

He is survived by on son, Jon Charles Hatt, of Ames; one daughter, Jane Laurie Toft, of Salix; three grandchildren, Christina Mae Henderson, of Los Angeles, Daniel Charles Hatt (Kayla), of Ankeny, and Gregory Jon Hatt, of Ames.
