Gerald Lyle Sielert, 90, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Friday, June 2, at Chateau Girardeau. A private service for the family will be in Ames with the Rev. Cindy McCalmont officiating. The body will be cremated and burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.Gerald was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Plymouth, Kan., the son of Walter Allen and Mary Bell (Horning) Sielert. He graduated from high school in Cresbard, S.D., earned a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., and completed a master's degree at Iowa State University, in Ames. He married Dorothy Louise Hoffman of Mitchell, S.D., Nov. 15, 1941. She died June 16, 2001. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in France, under General Patton.
He lived in Ames for 50 years, and taught 30 years in the Ames Community School system at the Ames Senior High School and Central Junior High. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis, Lions, Epsilon Pi Tau, Phi Delta Kappa, National Retired Teachers Association, the American Association of Retired Teachers and Collegiate United Methodist Church. He moved to Cape Girardeau and has resided at Chateau Girardeau since 2001.
He is survived by one son, Donald L. Sielert of McKinney, Texas; one daughter, Mary L. Baird of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers.
Memorials can be made to Chateau Girardeau, Cape Girardeau, Mo., or Collegiate United Methodist Church of Ames.
