THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, May 31, 2006.

Ethel Jean Schwertley, 87, of Ames, died Thursday, May 25, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Jean was born Dec. 3, 1918, on the family farm near Webster City to Wyatt E. and Alda MacFarland Lyon. They moved to Blairsburg in 1925 and to Goldfield in 1933, where she graduated from high school in 1937. She attended business college in Marshalltown for a year.

During World War II, she worked in Washington, D.C., for the war department for petroleum. While there, she married William Priddy, who died in 1978. She married Russell Schwertley Oct. 18, 1980, in Trenton, Mo. Following their retirement from ISU Memorial Union in 1982, they traveled around the country and settled in Casa Grande, Ariz., in 1985. He died May 3, 1999.

She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church; Sundial Chapter, D.A.R.; Laura Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; Friendship Court, Order of Amaranth; Judea Shrine, Order of White Shrine and Ames Women of the Moose.

She is survived by one grandson, Travis Priddy of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Doris Jones of Loveland, Colo.; several nieces and nephews; and two cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Douglas Priddy; one baby daughter, Linda Jean; one sister; three brothers and one niece.

Memorials may be directed to Northminster Presbyterian Church.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting her family with arrangements.
