THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, May 30, 2006.

John Silas Anderson, 94, died Saturday, May 27, at Northcrest Healthcare Center in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, at First Baptist Church in Ames.

John was born Feb. 2, 1912, in Wilmar, Minn., to Oscar E. Anderson and Annamaria Westlund Anderson. He grew up in Cokato, Minn. and graduated from Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He also graduated from Hartford Seminary Foundation Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford, Conn. He began his pastoral ministry in churches in Minnesota and Connecticut in 1935. He married Elaine Justine Halverson Jan. 1, 1943. In 1945, they began service in the provinces of Manipur and Assam in Northeast India with International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches. Three of their five children were born there. In 1955, the family returned to the United States, and John was called as pastor to First Baptist Church in Plainfield followed by Forrest Avenue Baptist Church in Des Moines. In 1967, the family moved to Ames when he accepted the position of administrator of Northcrest Retirement Community. He retired in 1982 and lived with Elaine at Northcrest until his death.

He was an avid gardener and never lost his love for words, reading, studying and traveling. He was a member of MidAmerican Ministers Council, American Baptist Ministers Council, Ames Lions Club, Prime Time Readers and First Baptist Church of Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Joyce Davidson of Ames and Jean Hayes of Winona, Minn.; two sons: Paul Anderson of Ironwood, Mich., and Stephen Anderson of Seattle; one sister: Dora Dahlborg of Summerville, Penn.; one brother: Lester Anderson of Pine River, Minn.; 11 grandchildren and 11great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, five sisters and one daughter.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Northcrest Retirement Community, 1801 20th St. Ames, Iowa (Please enter from 24th Street).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be given to Northcrest or to First Baptist Church.
