TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, May 25, 2006.

Michael Shawn Smith, 40, of Slater, took his life on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Big Creek State Park near Polk City. A gathering in memory of Michael was Tuesday, May 23, at the log cabin in Nelson Park in Slater. Michael's body was cremated.

Michael was born in Ames on Dec. 2, 1965 to George and Barbara (Newell) Smith. He resided throughout his life in the Slater area, and graduated from Ballard High School in 1984. He worked as a furnace and A/C installer for Ames Heating and Cooling for more than 20 years. Michael never married. He adored his daughter Samantha, a sophomore at Ballard High School. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting deer, elk, ram and turkey, and traveled to Texas to hunt wild boar.

Immediate survivors include his daughter, Samantha McKenzie Smith of Slater; father, George Smith of Slater; three brothers and a sister, Dwight Smith of Des Moines, Valerie Kraft of Slater, Travis Smith of Hubbard, and Dustin Smith of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara.
