THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, March 23, 2006.

Meril E. Washington, 68, of Nevada, died Sunday, March 19, at Israel Family House in Ames. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada with the Rev. Rayl Robbins officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be at White Oak Cemetery south of Cambridge.

Meril was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Linden, Texas, the son of Guy Hampton and Mary Elizabeth (Meacham) Washington. After high School, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He was a welder and moved to Iowa in 1987 to work for Iowa Construction at Iowa State University. He married Norma Elliott April 15, 1988, in Nevada. He was a former member of the Baptist Church in Texas, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Nevada; his children: Eugene (Teri) Washington of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Wade Washington of Carthage, Mo.; his step-children, Pita Petrus, Joel (Della) Petrus, Mark Petrus and Brian Petrus; numerous grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother: Mary Washington of Clute, Texas; two sisters: Sara (Ben) White of Freeport, Texas, and Martha (Joel) Miller of Alvarado, Texas; and five brothers: Guy (Pat) Washington Jr. of Hemphill, Texas, Travis Washington of Victoria, Texas, Jerry (Bonnie) Washington of Palacios, Texas, Don (Pat) Washington of Ashdown, Ark., and George (Cheryl) Washington of Wharton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Washington.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Bacon Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Story County Pheasants Forever and to Israel Family Hospice House.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
