THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, March 17, 2006.

Heather McAlpine, 18, of 132 West Seventh Street in Boone, died Sunday, March 12, in Quartzsite, Ariz., due to injuries from an all-terrain vehicle accident. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 20, at First United Methodist Church in Boone with the Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery south of Ames.

Heather Ann McAlpine was born March 9, 1988, in Boone, the daughter of Edward "Mac" and Candie (Smalley) McAlpine. She was presently a senior at Boone High School and had been accepted at Iowa State University, where she was to attend this fall and study journalism and communications. Her ambition was to work in public relations in the music industry.

She had many interests, including playing softball, reading, poetry, piano, drums, guitar, art, pottery, trampoline competition, drawing and designing and music. She also was involved with dance, high school choir and swing choir, and the TRI-M Chapter of Boone High. She enjoyed time with her family and friends, and working on her car.

She is survived by her parents, Edward "Mac" McAlpine and Candie McAlpine of Boone; three half-brothers, Willie McAlpine of Boone, Kenny McAlpine of Cedar Rapids and Shawn McAlpine of Colstrip, Mont.; her grandmothers, Betty Smalley and Viola "Vi" Caldwell, both of Boone; aunts and uncles, Bill and Cindy Smalley of Pilot Mound, Ray and Belinda Smalley of Kelley, Karen and Hal Cantonwine of Ames and Marlene and Ron Linn of Hastings, Neb.

McAlpine was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Walter Smalley, William McAlpine, and Forrest Caldwell.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to the time of service Monday at the church.

Candie McAlpine would like to invite friends to a musical jam session in her garage at 7 p.m. Friday, April 7, in celebration of Heather's life.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at its discretion.
