THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, March 15, 2006.

Dan Lawlor, 61, of 2231 210th St., Boone, died Wednesday, March 8, in a fire at his home. Visitation was Monday, March 13, at Pate Funeral Home in Clinton. A Catholic memorial Mass will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 20, at St. Cecilia Parish in Ames.

Daniel "Danny Boy" John Lawlor was born (one of 15 children) June 9, 1944, in Clinton to Cora Lucille (Powers) and Thomas Julius Lawlor. He attended St. Mary's School in Clinton. From there, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Vietnam. He ended his military career as chief petty officer on the USS Oriskany Aircraft Carrier off the coast of Hanoi. From there, he went on to college at Clinton Area Community College and later graduated from Iowa State University. In 1969, he married Mary McGovern of Clinton. He also completed three years of veterinary medicine at ISU. He achieved dean's list status throughout his college career. He was employed as a brakeman for the Chicago/Northwestern Railroad for Praxair Welding Supply (formerly R&R Welding Supply) in Ames and most recently at the Goodfeet Store in Urbandale. He and his wife, Mary (deceased), raised German shepherds for 20 plus years. They also loved their garden and music. He is now at peace with his wife, Mary, and will be missed deeply by his family and especially by his son James, daughter Jessie and brother Joe.

He is survived by one son, James Lawlor, and one daughter, Jessie Lawlor, of Ames/Boone; his mother, Cora "Boots" Lawlor of Clinton; two brothers, Joe Lawlor of Ames and John Lawlor of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 sisters, Michael Golinvaux, Joanne Luckritz, Janeen Naeve, Lucia McDonnell, Bernadette Voss and Mona Wiedeman, all of the Clinton area, Susan Unger of Sterling, Ill., Diane Osburn of Nashville, Tenn., Mary Villers of Salem Ore., and Catherine Everett of Lodi, Claif.; and 90 plus nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his father and two sisters.
