THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, March 8, 2006.

Lester Weigel, 84, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died Sunday, March 5, at the home. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Following the Mass, a luncheon will be in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in rural Boone following the lunch.

Lester was born April 21, 1921, in Boone, the son of Max and Callie (Knight) Weigel. He attended Carlson Country School No. 8 near Mackey. He married Florine Wheeler Jan. 8, 1946, at Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. He was a farmer northeast of Boone. He also was a representative for DeKalb Seed Corn. He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, and the Knights of Columbus Leo Council No. 814. He loved to play bridge, five hundred and pinochle. In earlier years, he enjoyed ballroom dancing, bowling, golfing and was a 4-H leader for many years as his children were growing up. He loved to be with his children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florine; two brothers, Leonard and Raymond Weigel; and four sisters, Marie Toms, Teresa Barker, Verna Wirth and Beatrice Irving.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Barb Weigel, Max and Kim Weigel, and Eric and Kandy Weigel, all of Boone, and David and Barb Weigel of Nevada; five daughters and sons-in-law, Florine and Collyn DeNio of Aurora, Colo., Jeannine and Steve Lee of Camden, Maine, Jeannette and Bijendra Prädhän of Rockland, Maine, Linda and Rikel Getty of Seattle and Teresa and Gary Norbraten of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Ardyce Peterson and husband, Hans of Ames; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and special friend, June Blomgren of Boone.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone where a vigil service will be at 7 p.m. and the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be given to Church of the Sacred Heart or Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
