THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, February 21, 2006.
Mary Sparks Hostetter, M.D., mother of six, wife and physician, died Friday, Feb. 17, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. A memorial gathering will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Iles Funeral Home, Dunn's Chapel.
Mary was born March 19, 1920, in Burkeburdette, Texas. She was a graduate of Lindenwood College and the University of Iowa. A pioneer in the world of women in medicine, she was one of five women in a class of 100 to graduate from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1950. She interned at Broadlawns and served a pediatrics residency at Blank Children's Hospital, specializing in adolescent medicine.
She was director of student health at Drake University for more than 20 years. She was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, Who's Who of American Women and the Chi Omega Sorority. She was fluent in Spanish, was an avid gardener and pursued the laws of physics at every opportunity.
She was preceded in death by husband, Dr. John Hostetter.
Her six children, Maryellen Faircloth (Art) of Kellogg, Kathy Richer of West Des Moines, Sarah Hostetter (Scott) of Denver, Colo., John and Jeff (Dee), all of West Des Moines, and Jesse (Shannon) of Nevada; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild celebrate her life.
