Delmar J. Toot, 86, of rural Nevada, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral mass was held on Wednesday, February 1 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada with Father Rick Dagit officiating.
Delmar was born in Richland Township to F. Leslie Toot and Maude (Condor) Toot. He graduated from Fernald High School in 1937. During WW II, he served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard. While stationed in Boston, MA, he met Mary Isabelle MacDonnell. They were married in 1946 and started farming near Roland, Iowa before moving to Nevada in 1952.
Delmar was a long time 4-H leader and served for several years as a Nevada Township Trustee. He was recognized in 2005 as a 60-year member of the American Legion. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with children.
Delmar is survived by his wife of 59 years, Isabelle; five sons, Joe (Barb), Gregg (Betty), David (Karen), and Paul (Molly), all of Nevada and Mark (Yvonne) of Virginia, MN. He is also survived by one son-in-law, Willie Croteau of St. Paul, MN, 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Lawrence Knaphus of McCallsburg, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Mary Toot-Croteau in 2005, and three sisters, Francis Knaphus, Virginia Moser, and Harriet Jesse.
Memorials may be directed to the Nevada Public Library or the Nevada Schools Foundation.
