THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, January 10, 2006.
Isabel Harris Matterson died Friday, Dec. 30, after almost 93 years on this earth. She lived with vitality, humor, strong-willed determination and purpose. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.
While she was teaching at the Cambridge School in Cambridge, Mass., she met her future husband, Clarence H. Matterson, a former professor at Iowa State University. Born in Hyannis, Mass., she was transplanted to the Midwest in the late 1930s where she lived for 68 years, but she never abandoned her Cape Cod identity or accent. She retired from the ISU library as a manuscripts curator in 1987. A loving mother and devoted wife, she was an early advocate for dyslexic children, an amateur horticulturalist, champion of conservationist issues and an active volunteer in social and political causes in the community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mattie; and her eldest child, Judith McLeran.
She is survived by children, Caroline, Charles and Melissa, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends who all will miss her very much.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University or Youth and Shelter Services Inc., at 420 S. Kellogg Ave.
