George William Goethals

George William Goethals, 86, of Nevada died on Wednesday, October 13 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 16 at 9:00 A.M. at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial will followed in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

George was born on April 13, 1918 in New York, N.Y. to Seraphin and Marie (Droesbeke) Goethals. In 1943, he received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in Agronomy. George married MaryJane Louise Hoff on March 12, 1944 in Des Moines. He retired in May of 1968 from Firestone Plantations Company in Harbel, Liberia, West Africa. George was a member of Psi Chi and Toastmasters. He enjoyed bridge, photography, golf and travel.

George is survived by his wife MaryJane Goethals of Nevada; 2 daughters, Valerie Goethals of Ames and Mary Lou Haddock; a grandson, Travis Haddock, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

George is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

A memorial fund has been established in George's name for the Nevada First Responders.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the arrangements.
