NEVADA JOURNAL, Nevada, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, December 8, 2005.

Evan Joy Swain, 99, of Dayton, Iowa, died Monday evening, December 5, 2005, at the Gowrie Care Center.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Saturday, December 10, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Rev. David Morris will officiate. Burial will be at the Dayton Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton.
Evan Joy Swain was born on April 4, 1906, in Mills County, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Lura (Jenkins) Swain. He graduated from Strahan High School and then attended Grinnell College for one year. In 1930, Evan was baptized at the Baptist Church in Malvern, Iowa. Evan was united in marriage to Mable Cox on February 28, 1932, in Malvern, Iowa. The couple lived north of Tabor, Iowa, until moving to Jefferson in 1936. In 1947, they bought a farm south of Dayton where they lived until moving into Dayton in 1980. Evan and Mable moved to Athens Woods Estates in Stratford in February of 2001, and in September of 2005 moved to the Senior Suites in Gowrie.
Evan was a 55 year member of the United Methodist Church in Dayton. He had belonged to the Dayton Lion's Club and was a 50 year Mason. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Evan and Mable loved to travel and wintered for many years in Rockport, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Mable Swain of Gowrie, Iowa, two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and John Fevold of Gowrie, Iowa, and Eleanor and Raymond Moeckly of Nevada, Iowa; six grandsons, one granddaughter; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doreen Emery of San Rafael, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Paul, Elwin, Kenneth, and Don Swain; and two step-brothers.
Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
