Mary E. Rood, 79, Slater, died Sunday from complications of kidney failure at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines. Services will be held Thursday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m., at Slater United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karin Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Slater Cemetery.

Mary Elsberry was born to Thomas and Phoebe Elsberry in Frazier. She graduated from Madrid High School, and on Feb. 2, 1929, she married Phil Rood. The couple lived in Woodward and Gladbrook, moving to Slater in 1932. She was co-publisher of The Slater News, retiring in 1972.

Survivors include her husband, Phil; one daughter, Phyllis Newman of Slater; one son, Ed Rood of Slater; one brother, Thomas Elsberry of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Sodeerstrum-Riis Funeral Home, Slater.
