Gertrude Thorson
Gertrude M. Teig Thorson, daughter of John O. and Betty Teig, was born March 2, 1896 on a farm in Hamilton County, west of Story City, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith while a child in the Clear Lake Ellsworth Church.
On February 24, 1923, Gertrude was united in marriage to Ira Thorson. They spent their entire married life on a farm west of Story City, with Ira passing away on January 24, 1972. In May of 1973, Gertrude left the farm, moving to Story City where she resided until her death. She died February 7, 1982 at her home. She had been in ill health since October of 1981.
She is survived by two daughters: Beverly, Mrs. Max Petzenhauser, Nappanee, Indiana, and Joyce, Mrs. Joe Hanson, Jewell; two sons, Irvin Thorson, Leland, and James Thorson, Jewell; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Martin, Stanhope.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Betty Swanson, two infant children, one grandson, six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1982 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Story City, with Pastor Orville Sanderson in charge.
Louise Olson, organist, accompanied soloists Jean Overland and Delbert Quam as they sang, "How Great Thou Art," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "The Lord's Prayer." Greetings were brought by Pastor Rudolph Anderson and Pastor Lyle Greiner, Gertrude's grandson-in-law.
Casket bearers were Michael Petzenhauser, Tim Lawson, Richard Thorson, Mitchell Thorson, Mark Swanson, Robert Swanson, Scott Swanson and James Swanson.
Burial followed at the Story City Municipal Cemetery.
