Funeral Rites for Michael Dougherty Friday Morning
Funeral rites for Michael J. Dougherty, 80, longtime resident of Story county who died Wednesday at the home of his nephew, Leo J. Koontz at 1006 Clark street, Ames, will be held Friday at 10 a. m. at St. Cecelia's church at Ames with burial in St. Patrick's cemetery, Nevada. Services will be in charge of Rev. Fr. N. A. Steffen.
Mr. Dougherty, whose wife died in 1918, had been ill, a sufferer from cancer, since September and had been confined to his bed since the first of the year.
He was born in Ireland, Aug. 17, 1860. When he was a lad of five years the family, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick dougherty and children, came to America and located on a farm near Nevada.
He lived with his parents until reaching young manhood, when he became employed in the railway service. Injured in an accident, he was compelled to retire from that work and was so severely crippled that he had to use crutches in walking the balance of his life.
He was married to Bea McNichols, daughter of another pioneer family of the community in 1908. They established their home in Chicago, where they remained until her passing in 1918. After the death of his wife he lived with his sister, Mrs. Thomas Koine in Marshalltown, until her passing, when he established his home with his nephew, Leo Koontz, where he had lived for 15 years.
Surviving are a brother, Barney C. Dougherty of Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Kate Delay of Chicago.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Marshalltown, and St. Cecelia's Catholic church at Ames.
