Melvin J. Swenson, 88, passed from this life into the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Nov. 7. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Saylorville Baptist Church in Des Moines. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Melvin was born Jan. 14, 1917, near Concordia, Kan. to John and Ida (Anderson) Swenson. He graduated from Kansas State University with a DVM in 1943, then served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps from 1943-46. He married Mildred Rockey in Des Moines in 1947. Melvin received a master's degree in 1947 and doctorate degree in 1950 from Iowa State University. He was assistant professor at Kansas State University from 1950-56; he was physiology professor at Colorado State University from 1956-57; he was professor and head of the department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State from 1957-73; he was professor of veterinary anatomy, pharmacology and physiology in the college of veterinary medicine at ISU and advised pre-vet. and veterinary students from 1973-87. He edited four editions of Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals and wrote numerous professional articles.
He enjoyed his family, gardening, reading, evangelistic ventures and was an active Gideon and church member.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Bruce) Koenigsberg and Brita (Brad) Meyer; one daughter-in-law, Charlotte Walden; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and siblings Carl Swenson and Violet Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; one son, Myron; his parents; and four siblings.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.
