THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Monday, November 7, 2005.

Gertrude Carper Burrell died Monday, Oct. 31, of cancer in her son's home in Tennessee.

Gertrude was born March 1, 1915, in Olds to Arthur E. and Leona (Morrison) Carper. She attended Olds High School, Iowa Wesleyan College, Culver-Stockton College, and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught school four years and was an editor at the Iowa State University Press from 1960 until her retirement in 1980.

On June 2, 1936, she married Harry G. Burrell in Morrison, Ill. They moved to Ames from Iowa City in 1942.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Chapter HO, P.E.O.; DAR; Chi Omega and Theta Chi sororities; Book and Basket Club; a life member of the Mary Greeley Medical Center Auxiliary; and various bridge clubs.

She is survived by a son, Colonel (Ret.) Steven K. Burrell, and his wife, Jeanie, of Greenback, Tenn.; three grandchildren: Kelly Multach and her husband Jeffrey, of San Antonio; Amy Burrell-Tichy and her husband, Guy, of Streamwood, Ill.; and Tim Burrell and his wife, Amy, of Frisco, Texas; seven great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Adam Multach; Joseph and Katherine Tichy; and Madison, Lauren and Erin Burrell; daughter-in-law Joan Burrell of Ames; and a sister, Ethel Loper, of Muscatine.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the First United Methodist Church, Ames. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Israel Family Hospice House, c/o MGMC Foundation, 1111 Duff Avenue, Ames, IA, 50010.
