BEN GAARD RITES HELD ON MONDAY

Well Known Local Man Died at Iowa City Last Friday, Following Long Illness and An Operation

Bernhard Gaard, 53, died at the hospital in Iowa City last Friday afternoon. He had been in failing health for some time, and several weeks ago was taken to the state hospital and an operation was performed. As he was not getting any better, recourse was had to another operation two days before he died.

Funeral services were held Monday in the Immanuel Lutheran church, with Rev. Heimarck officiating. A special song was rendered by Vern Hill, with Miss Alsager at the organ.

The pallbearers were Sidney Miller, C. F. Johnson, Iver Berven, Ole Oleson, Iver Olson and Lars Omvig.

Obituary

Bernhard Gaard was born in Story City July 24, 1885, being thus three weeks past 53 years of age at the time of his death on August 19, 1938.

He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Petri church at this place, and at the time of his death he and his family were members of the Immanuel congregation.

He was married May 9, 1910, to Randie Monson, and to this union six children were born, two of whom preceded the father in death. The wife and four children survive him, the children being Arnold, Roy and Gladys of this place, and Helen of Des Moines. One brother, Torvald, also survives him of his immediate family.

Pyle and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gaard of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Miler and Mr. and Mrs. Black of Ames, Joe Gaard of Roland, Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Wing, Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Robert Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Berven of Stanhope, Genevieve Munson of Clarion, Mr. and Mrs. Severt Berven of Kamrar, Lawrence Brudos, Mr. and Mrs. Iver Olson, Ilene and Vernal, Mr. and Mrs. Burton Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Omvig of Jewell.
