LIFE STORY OF PIONEER WOMAN

In the death of Story City of Mrs. Amy Mead, 78, Story county lost one more of its pioneer women, and the second of which a short time ago was a five generation group, has been called by death.

Funeral rites were held at Grace Evangelical church at Story City with her pastor Rev. G. L. Bergeman in charge and burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

Six of her grandsons served as pallbearers and bore the body of their grandmother to its final resting place, by the side of the body of her husband Asa B. Mead, who died at the family home in Nevada a score of years ago.

Mrs. Mead who had lived in Story City with her daughter, Mrs. Vandora Green and family for the past 17 years, died the evening of January 31 from complications due to a breakdown from old age. While she had been failing for some time, she was not confined to her bed until the final day.

The deceased was born Amy, eldest daughter of Seymour and Louesa Hix, at Sycamore, Illinois, September 18, 1859.

She came with her parents to Story county when a girl and they settled on a farm north of Colo in Sherman township, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Asa Mead, September 4, 1877.

The family home was on a farm for a time on which they lived for several years before moving to Nevada where the husband died. For the past many years of her life, she had lived with her daughter and husband at Story City.

She leaves three children they being the one son Guy Mead of Welcome, Minn., and daughters Mrs. Celia Schuler of Welcome, Minn. and Mrs. Vandora Green of Story City.

She also leaves three brothers, W. D. Hix of Rhodes, A. D. Bert Hix of Zearing and C. E. Hix of Nevada and two sisters, Mrs. F. S. Eddy of State Center and Mrs. Arthur Sanders, whose home is now in the state of Maine.

There are also 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mead was a loyal mother to her family and actively interested in friends and her neighbors. She was a member of the Evangelical church at Zearing, later transferring her membership to the Story City Evangelical church, when the family moved here several years ago. She was also a member of the OES.

Among those from distance who were present at the funeral were the son, Guy Mead and family and the daughter, Mrs. Charles Schuler and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Schuler and family and Mrs. Fred Rahfeldt, all of Welcome, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lesch and family of Wheeling, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Hix of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Hix of Denison, Mrs. Susie Eddy, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Benner, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wengert and Mrs. Lena Takie, all of State Center, Mr. and Mrs. Will Mead of Fernald.

Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Miller of Union, James Tesdale of Union, Mr. and Mrs. ead and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Handsaker of Fernald, Mrs. Will Schuler, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Rogers, Colo, Mr. and Mrs. E. Schuler, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lightfoot, Mrs. W. Deal, Mr. and Mrs. Norton, Mrs. R. Deal and son Omer, and Mrs. Mary Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. Aron Hefley, all of Zearing; Mrs. Bell Snelling and G. Roll of Des Moines and Mrs. Edith Gates of Ames.
