OBITUARY
MRS. NELS J. NELSON
Mrs. Nels J. Nelson (Tarvestad), nee Ellen Jensen, was born near Pontiac, Ill., Sept. 10, 1867, and died at Story City May 7, 1936, at the age of 69 years and eight months.
In 1877 she came with parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Jensen, to Benton county, where they lived for two years. They then moved to Story county and settled on a farm six miles southeast of Roland.
On Dec. 16, 1887, she was united in marriage with Nels J. Nelson. To this union eight children were born, Emily Eliza died at the age of three years, and the surviving children are: Maybelle (Mrs. Wier Thorson) of Story City; Alma (Mrs. Mark Jenkins) of Des Moines; Cora (Mrs. Oscar Vangness) of Story City; Neilus Nelson of Roland; Clarence Nelson of Story City; Emily (Mrs. Lewie Rasmussen) of Jewell; and Blanche (Mrs. Charles Ritchie) of Waterloo. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Martha Archambault of Superior.
The Nelson family lived on a farm two miles west of Roland until 1924 when they moved to Story City. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Salem church in Roland.
Monday, May 11, her funeral took place from the Salem church in Roland, where her pastors, Rev. Holen and Rev. Paulsrud, officiated. She was laid to rest beside her husband and daughter in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were sons, son-in-laws and a nephew: Neilius and Clarence Nelson, Oscar Vangness, Lewis Rasmussen, Charles Ritchie and Joe Johnson. Ted Quam sang three beautiful numbers, one at house and two at the church.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Thompson of McCallsburg and Joe Johnson of Roland.
