Death
LaVerne Smith
LaVerne James Smith, 80, rural Story City, died Thursday, May 9, 1991, of congestive heart failure, at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City with the Rev. Raymond Hampton officiating. Barb Doolittle was organist. Alan Sampson sang "In the Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer." The congregation sand "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee."
Casket bearers were Les Hoffman, Harold Holm, Dick Frandson, Bob Murken, Harold Johnson and Doug Doolittle. Honorary casket bearers were Marshall Thompson, Laurice Deaton, Kermit Voga, Don Johnson, Raymond Kammin, Willard Anderson and Harold Thompson. Burial was in the Story City Municipal Cemetery.
LaVerne was born Nov. 24, 1910 in rural Story City to James M. and Nellie (Johnson) Smith. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School. On June 3, 1931, he married Rena Johnson. He was a farmer, retiring in 1973. He was a lifetime resident of Story County and a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Owl Club.
Survivors include his wife, Rena of Story City; two daughters, Anita Fincham of rural Ames and Marjorie Schwenk of St. Louis, Missouri; one sister, Helen Nessa of Webster City; two brothers, Howard Smith of Story City and Alvin Smith of Nevada; six granddaughters; two great grandsons and one great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
