"DOC" JOHNSON IS LAID TO REST
Old Time Resident of Story City Died at County Home on New Year's Day
Charlie, better known as "Doc" Johnson died at the county home near Nevada on New Year's Day, and funeral service is being held this afternoon, Thursday, at the Grace church, with Rev. Fuller officiating.
Mr. Johnson was born in Kristiania, Norway, June 9, 1845, being thus at the time of his death 88 1/2 years old. He came to Story City with Mr. and Mrs. Tendeland from Marshalltown about 55 years ago. Since then Story City has been his home. He worked at various jobs and lived in his own little house on a lot he purchased near the M. & St. L. track, keeping house for himself until last fall when it was evident that age and decrepitude made it advisable to go to the county home. Friends who visited him there just before the holidays say he was well pleased with the home and the kindly treatment he was given there.
While Johnson had evidently become the victim of a cancer that was gradually disfiguring his face, his death seems to have been hastened by an attack of pneumonia. He was sick only a day or two.
So far as known, Mr. Johnson has no near relatives and arrangements for his funeral are being made by his long time neighbor, Mayor Jessen, assisted by other friends. Of "Charlie" it can be said that during a long life he studiously avoided speaking ill of or doing harm to anybody, being friendly to everyone.
