DEATH OF MRS. SMITH
Mrs. Susannah (J. T.) Smith died at the old homestead southwest of Center schoolhouse Monday morning at the ripe old age of almost 83 years. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon and the remains were interred at the Center cemetery.
Mrs. Susana Smith, nee Beechler, was born in Mifflinburg, Union county, Pa., Oct. 13, 1830. She grew to womanhood there and was married to James Thomas Smith. They moved to Freeport, Ill., in the year 1867, and in 1873 came on further west, settling on the farm southwest of Story City. The husband died May 19, 1886. Nine children were born to them, all of whom survive the parents namely: Perry, Charles, James, and Oscar, Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Cora, and Mrs. Wm. Huntley. Cora lives at Elk Point, S. D., and Mrs. Huntley at Van Meter, S. D., and the rest are honored citizens of this locality.
The deceased belonged to that hardy race of pioneer women who have done so much for Iowa. Kind and home loving, she endeared herself to her family and to all who came into contact with her and she has left a memory that will long live in the hearts of her loved ones.
