EARLY PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Sam Simmons Died at Hospital At Iowa City Friday Night From Pneumonia Following Operation For Ailment in Back.
The sad news reached here late Friday night that Sam Simmons had passed away at the University hospital at Iowa City after being ill for a few days with pneumonia. Mr. Simmons went to Iowa City a couple weeks ago to have an operation performed on his back, as he has for some years been crippled, having lost the use of his lower limbs because of some ailment of the back. It was hoped that an operation would relieve the trouble, but it was found that it was of such long standing that the physicians have a little hope that he would ever be able to retain the use of his limbs. A few days after the operation, pneumonia set in and death resulted as stated above, on Friday night. His wife and son, Bailus and his sister Mrs. Oscar Johnson were with him when the end came. The remains were brought here Monday and the funeral was held from Salem Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. N Sandven preaching the sermon. Interment took place in the Roland cemetery.
Sam Simmons was born near Roland February 14, 1866 and has always made this his home. On February 14, 1893, he was united to miss Inger Risvold to which union one son, Baylus of Forest City was born. Mrs. Simmons died May 11, 1905. On June 06, 1906, he was married to Miss Rachel Klungtwedt, and one son, Reuben, was born to this union.
His death occurred as stated above at Iowa City on Friday, February 22, 1924 at the age of 58 years and 8 days. Besides his wife and two sons, he leaves a granddaughter, one brother, Jacob Simmons who lives in Washington, and one sister Mrs. Oscar Johnson, of Thompson. Besides a large circle of relatives and friends.
Mr. Simmons was of a genial spirit and never complained, being always willing to do such work as his crippled condition would allow, and when he met anyone, he had a smile and a greeting for all, and he has many friends who will sincerely miss him.
