Joseph William Stratton, 66, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames of pancreatic cancer.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the Fireside Room at Collegiate United Methodist Church, Ames. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Collegiate United Methodist Church.
Joe was born March 7, 1939, in Quimby to William and Mildred Stratton. He graduated from Quimby Consolidated School in 1957. Joe attended Westmar University in LeMars and Drake University in Des Moines.
Joe served as business manager and board secretary for the Marcus and Audubon community school districts before assuming the same responsibilities for the Ames Community School District. Joe retired in 1999 after working 33 years for the Ames Schools.On Feb. 21, 1960, Joe married Mary Galvin in Quimby. Joe and Mary had three children, Jeff (Kayla) of Ankeny, Ann Cornelison (Mike) of Ankeny and Natalie of Ames. Joe is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary; his children; his sister, Joan Oentrich of Cherokee; his brother Robert of Waiane, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Nicole and William Harrison; Lucas Cornelison; and Greer Stratton; and two step-grandchildren, Matt and Josh Cornelison. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.
Joe enjoyed playing golf, the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa State athletics, travel and time spent with his family and friends. He was a member of Collegiate United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, and the Moose Lodge. He was formerly president of the Iowa Association of School Business Officials.
Memorials may be sent to the Collegiate United Methodist Church, Bliss Cancer Center or Israel Family Hospice House, all of Ames.
