OBITUARY

Mrs. Bertha Smith

Mrs. Bertha Smith, nee Johnson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Johnson, was born near Vermillion, South Dakota, March 2, 1862. While still a small girl, her parents removed to Story county, Ia., and settled on a farm, three miles south of Story City, at which place she obtained a working knowledge of the common school studies. After some years, her mother having passed away in death, her father removed to Graettinger, Iowa, where in 1890, Sept. 1 she was married to Martin Smith of Chicago, and soon after moved to that city, where her husband engaged in business.

In 1900 she with her husband came to Story City to reside and with the exception of a few years' residence at New England, N. D. Mrs. Smith made her home in Story City. During the long illness of her companion who preceded her about three months ago, it became evident that her own strength was failing; every effort was made by physicians and loving friends toward her recovery, finally permitting her to go, as she desired, to the Sanitarium at Oak Dale for treatment [of tuberculosis], but all efforts failed to give her relief, and on Friday, Feb. 1, 1924 she passed away to her Eternal Home at the age of 61 years, 10 months, 29 days.

Mrs. Smith was a member of some Christian church from the days of her girlhood, and of Grace church for some years. While at Chicago she took a very definite part in S. S. and reform work; spending many hours and making many sacrifices for those in physical as well as in spiritual need. As a member of Grace church she was in attendance at all of its services when opportunity and strength permitted. She went to her reward in resignation of God's will and full assurance of faith.

All of her brothers and sister preceded her to the Spirit world. No near relatives reside in the country. More distant relatives and many friends unite in expressing their common loss in her death.
